Meditation: Guided vs Unguided

17/08/2020

Hi Guys, Gals and Non-binary pals!

So it's come to my attention that not many people know how to meditate. Well I'm here to swoop in, save the day and help you out! Fist off, there is no right or wrong way to meditate. Experiment with different ways until you find what works for you! That being said, I'm going to explore the differences, pros and cons of guided vs unguided meditation. It's so important to pick the method that works best for you as you're more likely to get frustrated and give up if you're using the wrong method. That being said, you can also use a mix of guided and unguided, i personally do as i find i can get specific things out of guided, but I'm more relaxed if i do unguided.

Guided Meditations.

To the right you will find links and videos to YouTube for guided meditations.
Guided meditations are one of the most useful tools if you want to get something specific out of your meditation and if you're a beginner. The first link you'll find is for past life regression, this is something i have done with this exact video and i promise soon i will share my experiences with it for you.

There is also numerous meditation apps you can use such as Calm and Headspace. These are super easy for beginners as a speaker takes you through breathing techniques and gives you something to focus on. The voice you hear guiding you are often experienced and can be trusted. They know what they're doing so you're in capable hands.

Advantages include:

  • Structured Framework
  • Group Classes
  • Support
  • Step by Step Guide
  • A variety of Instructors
  • Different Techniques
  • Timed Meditations
  • Builds Confidence
  • Strong Fundamentals
  • Encourages Consistent Practice.

On the other hand, the disadvantages include:

  • In can be restricting for Advanced Meditators
  • Voice of instructor can be distracting
  • Structure might be too rigid and confining
  • Locked into meditation time, this might be too long, or you might be left feeling disappointed at the end if you feel it's too short.

Unguided Meditation

In unguided meditation, you are your own guide. After looking at numerous websites for inspiration for this blog, they all thoroughly advise beginners don't attempt. I can see why but i don't like gate keeping unless it's for a specific reason (safety/ heritage). I thik it's kinda rude to say it's beyond a beginners reach and actually, i mainly only do unguided meditation and it's how i started. The first thing to remember is that it's okay of you have a thought whilst meditating. Whilst the goal is to clear your mind, things come to us naturally, we are busy creature and whilst in a state of relaxation, our mind opens up allowing us to remember things we may have forgotten to do. The easiest way to not get to distracted is to allow those thoughts to come but to brush them aside as the do. Do not fixate on them. The easiest way for me to clear my mind, is at the beginning of meditating i imaging a big green bin. I imagine I'm placing all my thoughts in this bin, i lock it and push it away. These are just the thoughts that bare in the forefront of your mind, as you relax the thoughts in your subconscious like to sneak in. You have to be some what strict with yourself. "Okay I've had this thought, now we empty our mind once again." It does take practice but i don't think that should prevent anyone from trying it straight off the bat. If it doesn't work for you then that's fine! Try something else. Tangent now aside, lets discuss the advantages and disadvantages !

Advantages:

  • Freedom
  • Untimed Meditation (as long or as short as you're up for in that time)
  • No External Distractions
  • Deeper Contemplation
  • Deeper Spiritual Meditation
  • Silent Meditation
  • Deeper Absorption
  • Tap into Higher Vibrations
  • Can be Practised Privately
  • Customise your Meditation Practise

Disadvantages include:

  • Possibility to be Overwhelming for Beginners
  • Can Cause Frustration
  • You may feel like your'e not doing it right- just research thoroughly and trust in yourself, there is no correct way to meditate.
  • You have to be strict with yourself, and sometimes you can become easily distracted.

I hope this helps you all out! Don't be afraid to try new things and to mix both methods! There is no correct way to practise, just do what you feel is best. Below you will find links to relaxing music- these are brilliant for unguided meditation as it reduces distractions from around the house. I often find if I'm home alone i deliberately listen out for noise, or if people are home, their voices can draw you out of a deep meditation. Be kind to yourself and remind yourself that it's okay if you become temporarily distracted.

Much love, an Eclectic Witch xoxo
