Honey Jar Spell

27/08/2020

Ok, full disclosure, i didn't use honey. Honey is not something we have in our house and in terms of an ingredient, it's not exactly cheap, especially when it's not something i use much within my craft. But that's ok! As I've said before and will say frequently, most ingredient can be substituted for something else. In my case i used golden syrup ( for you who don't live in England, it's a light treacle).

So what exactly is a Honey Jar?

A Honey Jar, also know as a Sweetening Jar or a Sugar Jar Spell, is a way to sweeten up your life and is used mainly as a self-love spell. Now it's important to understand where these sorts of ideas come from. Keeping a spell within in a jar or a bottle is widely used within many different traditions of folk magic, particularly in North America, but also quite prominent in Wicca and Paganism. By knowing where a type of magic originated from, we are able to fully respect the practise. Of course many different places used this idea as it keeps the spell concentrated and from escaping before its finished, and they're also portable which is convenient and so there isn't any cultural appropriation here.

Ingredients (these are mainly what i used but feel free to use anything you feel that promotes love, kindness, joy, harmony, goodwill, and favored status.)

  • Honey/ Maple Syrup/ Molasses/  Simple syrup/ other sweeteners
  • Sugar
  • Sea salt( Pink Himalayan Salt was recommenced but i feel you can use whatever salt you have available)
  • Powered Eggshell ( this and salt are typical for protection, this allows you to protect your heart)
  • Rose Petals
  • I put in mine Lavender, Rosemary and Rose essential oils.
  • A Sigil ( you can find one online but it's always safer to do your own- blog post coming soon!) or a Petition if  you prefer.
  • Small red or pink ribbon
  • Pen
  • A red/ pink/ white candle.

The Method:

This is why i love jar spells, you can put the ingredients in in any order you desire! I put mine in in the order they appear on the ingredients list down to the sigil or petition.

You need to write/draw your sigil or petition in pen as it's permanent. i then rolled mine into a tiny scroll and fastened it with the small ribbon.
once all your ingredients are in there, place the lid on and seal with wax.
Again, you can use any herbs/ oils etc that you associate with love. make sure your intent is clear throughout the spell.

This is what mine looked like:

(not the greatest photo hehe)

The petition made for a honey jar tends to follow a specific format. First, you will write the name of your target (the person you would like the honey jar to effect), then you will turn the paper 90 degrees and write your name on top of the target's name. If you are doing a honey jar on yourself then you do not have to do this second step. (click the image to find out where i got this specific information from)
